Causes of Hemorrhoids

There are millions of people in the world that suffer from hemorrhoids, many of which may not really know the reasons as to what cause them. There are quite a few different causes of hemorrhoids, some that might be shocking to find out. In order to figure out the causes of hemorrhoids one must full understand what a hemorrhoid is. A hemorrhoid can best be described as an inflammation of blood vessels located either in the anal cavity or right outside of the anus. There is a difference between internal and external, but the causes of hemorrhoids is the same.

There are numerous arteries that are located within the anal cavity that flow directly down the anal canal to the anus. This should explain why if people notice blood from hemorrhoids it is bright red, indicating active bleeding. Another thing to know is that the amount of blood can vary depending on how severe the hemorrhoids are but this should not be alarming. Now there are many old wives tales about the causes of hemorrhoids such as sitting for long periods of time can cause them and sitting on a cold surface. These are not true! The main causes of hemorrhoids are a lack of fiber intake, constipation, straining of muscles, and sitting on the toilet for a long period of time.

None of the stated has been scientifically proven, but a fact that has been proven is that pregnancy is a direct cause for enlarged hemorrhoids. Pregnant woman do go through bouts of constipation and normally take a fiber supplement throughout their pregnancy. If they happen to be one of the lucky ones that do no suffer from hemorrhoids during pregnancy they may after delivery, this can be caused due to the pressure of the baby and the pushing/straining during delivery. Another cause can be from the decreased blood flow due to the positioning of the baby within the woman’s body.

Tumors are also known to cause enlarged hemorrhoids. This is due to the pressure that they create on blood vessels, basically obstructing the natural flow of blood throughout the body. There are a couple of theories surrounding the exact cause of hemorrhoids some being with age the muscles become slightly lax and droop, another may be from hard stool passing through and pulling on the blood vessels located in the anal cavity. Either way, hemorrhoids are uncomfortable and can be treated pretty easily.
